Dear Reader,
On Tuesday evening, April 18, the Acton Institute released our latest documentary, The Hong Konger: Jimmy Lai's Extraordinary Struggle for Freedom, free of charge to the world, rather than through a streaming service In just over 72 hours, we reached 250,000 views! We want more people to see this film. We want everyone to see this film. We want to raise awareness about Jimmy Lai's extraordinary fight for freedom in Hong Kong. My hope is that in a few short weeks, we will hit 1 million views.
We can do this by having our friends (1) share The Hong Konger with their networks, (2) take to social media with #FreeJimmyLai, and (3) donate to our grassroots marketing campaign to tell Jimmy's story far and wide. Jimmy Lai is in prison in Hong Kong awaiting trial in September: an opportunity for vindication and to provide renewed hope for all Hong Kongers. While the possibility of his getting an unfair trial remains a reality, you and I believe that justice and freedom are two of those rare things worth fighting for. And we aren't the only ones!
When Hong Kong's basic freedoms came under attack, newspaper publisher and pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai found himself in the crosshairs of the state and had to choose to defend either Hong Kong's long-standing liberties or his own freedom. Jimmy chose to stay and fight and was imprisoned for his courage.
Jimmy's story is one that cannot die in a prison cell—it is one that must reignite a persistent movement to defend the cause of freedom for Hong Kongers, for China as a whole, and humanity everywhere. This is why we chose to create The Hong Konger.
I hope you join us today in our mission to defend freedom and raise awareness about Jimmy Lai's extraordinary fight.
Very Truly Yours,Kris Alan MaurenPresidentActon Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty |
