From Diane Schmidt, your About House & Home Editor
For the most part, I try to get my nutrients from fresh food sources, sources that - in winter - often travel from far away places, costing a fortune. But now that summer is almost here, not only will fresh foods be abundantly available, but more affordable, too. Especially if you follow the advice of our knowledgeable Guides who have some excellent tips for eating healthy on a budget.

Save Money at the Farmer's Market
Buying direct from the farmer rather than large supermarkets is often a great start to saving money. Yet this article takes the whole budget-eating idea a step further with great tips on how to cut those costs even more.

Plan a Garden to Feed a Family
A friend had a bet with her mother-in-law that the costs of planting, maintaining and harvesting her backyard garden were significantly less than what she would've paid at the local supermarket. So last year, she weighed and compared the two food sources. Turns out that not only did her garden save her $500 in groceries, her kids now love broccoli!

Grow Veggies in Containers
I'm a big fan of container gardening. It's cheap. It's low maintenance and with the help of the About Guide to Container Gardening, it's easy, too!

Growing Herbs For Profit
Basil is one of my favorite herbs so I tend to always overestimate exactly how much pesto one family can eat. I never thought of turning those extra bunches of green into another kind of green until I came across this great article on how to make money from your home-grown herbs.
