About House & Home: Top 10 Tips for a Fabulous Garden

Ever since Michelle Obama decided to find a practical use for the White House lawn, everyone seems to be getting into gardening. Even my next door neighbor who, upon moving in, covered every inch of gardening space with slabs of concrete. Yesterday, she winked at me while she watched her husband demolish the entire front yard with a jackhammer, clearly ignoring his screams of, "I told you so".

10 Ways to Make Gardening Easier
I'm a lazy gardener. I'd buy goats if the city would allow them and if they could be taught how to distinguish a weed from the top of a parsnip.

Solutions for that corner that never seems to get enough sun, partly because our neighbors (yes, the cement-lovers) decided that only one tree would remain in their backyard and that tree casts a large shadow over a portion of our garden. Happy for the tree. Sad for my tomatoes.

10 Tips for Low-Maintenance Landscaping
My husband claims he knows all about low-maintenance landscaping. He calls it "no fuss, no muss". I call it "forgetting to mow the lawn".

About House & Home: Plan a Summer Road Trip

  from Diane Schmidt
Summer vacations start this coming holiday weekend with people traveling to the cottage for the first time all year, driving to see distant relatives or simply heading to the local park for a picnic. Even if you're not planning a big get-away, summer still requires that you take some time off, relax and make plans to enjoy the freedom of the road.

Get Your Car Ready for the Road
My husband just announced that he wants to do a road trip this summer. I'm hesitant, just because it seems every road trip we take, something happens to our mode of transport. We were once stranded on a deserted back country road, with the closest lodge a Bates motel right out of Psycho. We spent three days there and I didn't shower once.

Take Your Pooch on the Road
Traveling with dogs can be a lot of fun if you've done enough research, found places to stop along the way and dog-friendly lodgings whose owners don't keep their mothers locked in the attic.

Top 10 Travel Activities
I think the most terrifying phrase one can hear, often shouted from the backseat of a moving car after just an hour on the road, is: "I'm bored!" Ugh. If you're not a fan of earplugs, it's a good idea to plan activities before you even map out your route. There have been lots of road trips cut short by those two tiny words.

About House & Home: Turn Your Patio into the Perfect Vacation Spot

  from Diane Schmidt
To save money, this summer we're planning on using our own backyard as our vacation spot. Okay, so we don't have a pool or waiters and someone in the household has to do the dishes. But still, we also don't have to contend with crowded airports, long road trips or sold-out motels.

Turn Your Patio into a Vacation Spot
All winter I stare longingly from the kitchen window and dream of all the books I'll read, the late afternoon naps and the drinks I'll share with friends on our small back patio. It's my haven. And it's cheaper than airfares, hotels and restaurant tabs...

10 Fab Finds for Outdoor Seating
Last year I spent almost the entire summer looking for the perfect patio chair. It needed to be good for reading, eating, lounging and I needed to be able to sit in it for hours without my back seizing. The only problem was, by the time I found it, the summer was over and I never got to use it.

Can't Find the Perfect Chair - Build Your Own!
I'm not good with tools, but looking at this gorgeous Adirondack love seat makes me want to pick up a hammer and saw. And with Chris's free plans and his step by step guide, I think even I could take on this project.

With the change in the weather comes the need to shake up things a bit. So, if you're not in the mood to go skydiving or dye your hair a bright shade of red (I did this last summer with terrible results!), then maybe add some color and pizazz to your home with these great tips from our Guides.

DIY Paint Guide for Budget Decorators
I'm a bit obsessed about paint. Every spring I spend hours in the home renovation store, checking out the new color palettes. Last year, I realized that what looks good in the store doesn't necessarily translate well to my home office, the kitchen or the bedroom.

Candles are a great way of adding not only color, but a little romance, without adding to the electricity bill. Plus, you can chase away those dreaded mosquitoes with David's citronella bucket candles. Cool!
