Why I love the Epoch Times
- A reader's journey

— From Eric Lowther, an Epoch Times subscriber

My name is Eric, and I wanted to share my journey with you – a journey that led me to the Epoch Times, a beacon of truth in today's complex media landscape.

In years past I enjoyed working in the technology and telecom industry.  As a successful manager in a large company and later working with new start-ups I eventually served as the vice president for a technology company in Calgary for seven years. Even though things were going well I became increasingly concerned about the trends I saw in our country. Driven by a desire to improve things, I thought serving in politics might allow me to make a difference.

In those years I was elected as the member of Parliament for Calgary Centre. Later in life I also served on a municipal council in Alberta. From the experiences in political offices I learned a lot. It seemed to me that our politics is merely a reflection of where our society is at. I came to realize that politics alone will not solve the problems of today. It is deeper than that. It is rooted in our culture and institutions.

My wife, who is a retired schoolteacher,  and I, both see the challenges in today’s society rapidly and exponentially increasing. The institutions we grew up trusting seem to be crumbling. The truth is more difficult to determine, as there are so many conflicting agendas today. This has undermined trust in our institutions, it divides people, and weakens us all.

In political office you grow to appreciate that professional journalism, the media, serves an important role in our society. Journalistic integrity is critical. Providing  truthful, balanced information to the public is a key part of a functioning democracy. Over the past few decades the legacy mainstream media companies faced rising costs and competition. They increasingly relied on government funding to survive. They also became more desperate for readership and the headlines became more sensational and extreme in efforts to attract and hold subscribers. Government funding of the media also made them more supportive of government action and policies instead of  providing the robust critiques so badly needed today.

Then along came COVID. The COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated these issues, revealing a deeper, more pervasive corruption in media.  We saw the mainstream media, through COVID, was totally aligned with the government’s narrative. Professional voices of very credible doctors and research scientists were denounced, deplatformed, and dismissed. Even prior to being elected as Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, had to resign from her very popular radio show for allowing anyone, no matter how excellent their credentials, to present information that did not fully align with  the government’s narrative.

Through a friend I encountered an ad for The Epoch Times. I thought I would give them a try because they seemed to allow a more complete view of what was really going on.

Initially, I just looked at some of their articles online and was not aware of the depth and breadth of all that they provided. Over time we have become increasingly grateful for this amazingly rich media service committed to truth, tradition and hope.

My wife and I appreciate being able to sit down after dinner, and watch the evening news covering world events with reporting we can trust through Epoch.TV.  We are also grateful for the excellent opinion pieces from people like Conrad Black, John Robson, Preston Manning, John Carpay and others. Many of these cultural influencers are hard to find in mainstream publications.  In addition, The Epoch Times brings us valuable articles on health, family traditions, and scientific breakthroughs. We often save the digital articles and print copies for sharing and future reference.

One thing that I am forever grateful  for is that The Epoch Times was among the very first to report on the contagious nature of COVID-19 virus when it just appeared in China. And the critical information it provided about the virus helped to save the lives of my wife and I.

Isn’t it ironic that a media outlet founded by people who were persecuted and escaped communist China are now resiliently filling a critical role in Canada to safeguard this country’s traditional values, and are presenting the truth, and giving hope on many fronts?

Despite facing attacks and false accusations  generated by the Chinese Communist Party and some mainstream media players, The Epoch Times has stayed true to its commitment to truth, tradition, and hope. For us, and many of our friends, it has proven to be a media service we can trust. And the best part? It costs just pennies a day for this rich, print, digital, and TV media service.

Thank you, Epoch Times, for being a trustworthy media source in these challenging times. Please keep going – we need you!

Best regards,

Eric Lowther
