Last winter, we had a series of freak snowstorms that swept the northwest and buried our home in a thick blanket of snow. It would've been okay, but we were shocked when the gas bill arrived - it was almost triple the normal amount. This year, I'm prepared. I've read all the tips on how save energy. I've even stopped grooming the pets in case all that extra hair can keep my toes warm at night.

About House & Home: Creative Ways to Decorate with Pumpkins

  from Diane Schmidt
I just spent the last twelve hours carving pumpkins for a local community project, and while I'd rather eat the orange flesh in a pie, there was something soothing about scooping out that gooey mess - it made me feel like I was five again. Couldn't we all use a bit of that?

Host a Halloween Pumpkin Decorating Party
This is really what I should've done instead of trying to carve all those pumpkins on my own. Hosting a pumpkin-decorating party is not only a great excuse to socialize with friends and family, but it also ensures that your jack-o-lanterns don't all look the same. Like mine, for instance. Most of them resemble my Uncle George.

Hanging Pumpkin Candle Holders
I love this idea. These pretty candles would look great on a patio or deck or to welcome trick-or-treaters to your door.

Make Your Own Pumpkin Planter
I never would've thought of using pumpkins as planters. This is ingenious. Containers can be so expensive and it's difficult to find Halloween or Thanksgiving-themed ones that you can use inside or out.

I never used to think about how much I spent on cleaning products until my sister remarked on the number of different kinds of spray bottles stashed in various cupboards around our house. I just thought having so many would somehow - magically - keep my house cleaner.

Save Money by Making Your Own Cleaners
Now, this is pretty cool. I can make my own cleaners for very little cost. Plus, it saves me the time required to dig out my reading glasses just to find out that the product has a zillion chemicals that I can't even pronounce.

Vinegar - the Miracle Laundry Product
Vinegar is your friend. That's what my mother used to tell me. She used it to clean everything, but I don't think she every thought of using it in the laundry where it can fight tough stains, odor and a whole lot more for just pennies a load. Amazing.

The houses on our street compete each year for best Halloween decorations. It's pretty fierce competition, too. My theory is that it started with the guy down the street who insists on setting up a fake cemetery in his front yard...in July.
