From Diane Schmidt, your About House & Home Editor
Where I live, fall is well underway with golden leaves covering the driveway and bright, red bushes lining the walkway that leads to the front door. The colors of fall are so warm, rich and intense, providing an inspiring palette for your home, both inside and out.

Warm Up Your Home with Fall Decorating
When the temperatures start to drop and fireplaces are lit, it's time to add some warm touches to the interior, like soft lighting, textured throws and plush area rugs. According to this article, it's the small changes that will create a cozy and serene space.

Colorful Fall Container Garden Ideas
Just the other day, I removed all the old veggie plants and summer flowers from our outside containers, thinking it would be months before I'd be able to use them again. That is, until I came across this inspiring gallery of fall container gardens.

Flowers for Fall Gardens
This is a great list of fall flowers that will continue to bloom long past the retreat of summer suns. Just the other day, my father-in-law pointed out the hardy cyclamen that began to bloom over the weekend, and after reading more about it here, I'll be sure to include it in my fall garden.

Pumpkin Soaps and Candles
There's nothing like using nature as a point of inspiration. These recipes go a few steps further: they take the scent and color of pumpkin and pumpkin spices and transform them into a beautiful yet practical addition to any home decor.

About House & Home: Halloween Tips, Black Cat Month & More

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Diane Schmidt, your About House & Home Editor
With trick-or-treating-eve less than two weeks away, our Home and Garden Guides have put together an extensive and inclusive list of ways to celebrate Halloween in all its gory goodness. With everything from decorations to costume designing, you'll find what you need right here.

Halloween Ideas & Tips
If you're trying to decide what kind of face to carve on your pumpkin or aren't sure how to create the perfect witch costume, look no further than this definitive guide to Halloween fun. It even offers some sage advice on what to do if Halloween just isn't your thing. It's spook-tacular!

Black Cat Month
At an animal shelter where I volunteer, we have a hard time adopting out black cats. People tend to shy away from them, even though they're the most affectionate kitties you'll ever meet. We're fortunate enough to have two black cats in our household, both of whom love to cuddle, are extremely vocal and playful. Find out more about black cat lore, what makes black cats special, then upload a photo of your favorite black cat right here.

Frightfully Divine Decor
This is definitely a spooky space that's a little like Edgar Allan Poe meets the French Revolution. While this might not be to everyone's taste, there's a kind of fascination that draws the viewer in. I love the art wall and the small touches that makes this room extraordinary.

Tricks for Treating Halloween Stains
Halloween is by far the stickiest, stain-producing holiday we have. I know this year I'll be fighting fake blood spots, dripping wax and rice-infused face putty because of my husband's instance that we dress up as prom king and queen, zombie-style. This stain-fighter guide will be taking center-stage in our laundry room.

From Diane Schmidt, your About House & Home Editor
Our neighbors installed solar panels on their roof and replaced the worn tile in their kitchen and dining room with green flooring. I was surprised when they told us how much they spent (less than expected) and how much they'll save (a lot). So if you're thinking of renovations, big or small, check out these guides to affordable green design.

Cost Effective Green Flooring
After hearing about our neighbor's new flooring, I just had to visit our local home shop to see the variety of green options available. I loved the recycled cork flooring made from bottle stoppers. Not only is it quite beautiful and durable, but a great conversation piece, too.

Top 10 Solar Energy Uses
It's amazing how we can use solar power to save money and the planet. Just take a look at this list of solar power uses - with everything from heating our water to recharging batteries, it seems that the sun can provide us with more energy than we need to keep our homes humming.

8 Easy Ways to Have a Green Bathroom
This is a great article for people who aren't quite ready to renovate their bathrooms, but would like to save money and the earth with some simple tips and suggestions for going green. Like installing a faucet aerator that will save on water bills.
